Carbon trading scheme could close mines

No shit, Sherlock?

Carbon trading scheme could just about shut down Australia.

And some AGW Gurus are not unhappy about it - it won't impact on their lives.

Visy warns of job cuts from ETS

Christian Kerr September 29, 2008

RECYCLING giant Visy has warned that the Government's proposed emissions trading scheme would force it to immediately close two recycling and paper manufacturing facilities with the direct loss of 160 jobs.

Visy, renowned as one of the nation's greenest companies, has slammed the proposed scheme's cost of $20 on a tonne of emissions, in its response to the Government's emissions trading green paper.

Its submission states that a $20 a tonne carbon price would damage Visy's "corporate engine", Visy Pulp & Paper, jeopardising at least $1billion in planned investment.

"Visy's first-mover status in environmental performance puts it at a disadvantage compared with other Australian industries, including its competitors," the submission says.

"The CPRS (Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme) does not recognise the carbon benefits from recycling, leading to severe collateral impacts on Australia's domestic recycling/remanufacturing industries.
Honestly, who do the people pushing for a reduction in "carbon pollution" and increasing taxes and tariffs think are the ones who are going to be paying the added taxes and tariffs? I wish they'd wake up that it's a scam.

We just went driving down the Great Ocean Road, Kae, and one thing that had me totally gobsmacked was the signage a few kms out from a plantation:

In big letters, it says, "Plantation Harvesting and Reforestation on Private Land."

I was so offended just to drive past the sign. Sure the hills were looking pretty bald, but ffs, there's something wrong when a company feels obliged to state that they are on private land and are replanting.

Of course, that's smack bang in the middle of the Otways, and there are far too many of the econongs there.

As my godfather put it when I asked him about the signs, (paraphrasing) the greenies have accomplished one or two things.... at the expense of a lot of businesses.

That's what it's designed to do. Has nobody noticed?

Well put, Wand. It's a simple concept, and should be apparent to everyone who has the slightest capacity to work out the consequences of their actions.
For those who do not have that capacity, here is an explanation:

The carbon trading scheme cannot reduce emissions unless it reduces energy use.
The only way it can achieve reduction in energy use is to make energy too expensive to use.
Costs of business rise rapidly until they equal revenue earned by business.
Consequence: A large cut in emissions as businesses close down or move off-shore.
