In response to the article about the collapse of the World Trade Center (11 February, p 40) and the letter entitled "Steel's weakness" (4 March, p 25) I can advise that we engineers can explain the collapses of the three buildings (WTC 1, WTC 2 and WTC 7) without resorting to any help from missiles or pre-placed demolition charges. I'm just annoyed. Like every 11th September and 12th October, I drive around with my lights on high beam, in commemoration of those innocents who have died as a result of militant Mohammedist fascism.
Today, maybe one in 100 motorists had their lights on. I had people from the opposite direction flashing me, to say that my lights were on.
Lest we forget? Everyone has forgotten.

Kaboom, I realised thisafternoon, after a busy day, that it was September 12 when we woke to see the horrific vision and the dreadful news from the US.
I've got some photographs that Dad took of a holiday in the US. I'll put them up later tonight if I can find them!
Kae, I got it live. I remember precisely where I was - I was playing internet backgammon against someone in the USA at 11:30p.m. on that Tuesday night, and they said "OMG, I've got to go - a plane has crashed into the WTC!"
I did a bit of Googling, and yes, early reports were coming in.
I went to the TV (back in those days, TV was more reliable for breaking news than the 'net), and after a bit of channel-flipping, found a news feed, just when pictures of the second plane were coming in.
After about 15 mins, I rang up my elderly father, and said "turn on your TV". He said "what channel?". I said "It doesn't matter - any channel."
He said "What's on?", and I said "The start of World War 3".
A day of infamy, seared, seared I say, into my memory.
Fuck those Mohemmadan pricks.
A couple of days later, I adopted the screen personna "Kaboom".

I saw the second plane, too.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
And there was noone for me to talk about it with...
The next morning MDFD phoned because she'd woken up and was watching the news live from the US on the morning programme.
I'm looking for those pictures...
That's when I realised how much hate there is in the world. Hate and jealousy.
We were stationed at the Marine base on O'ahu. The alarm went off, but it wasn't Rick Hamada's voice on the bedside radio. Base was locked down later that day, when I went to the school to pick up our daughter. Took 3 hours to get back home because every car was stopped at the gate. Got lots of IM's from folks back stateside...didn't go to sleep for a long time.
Armed patrols at commissary & on the streets to check i.d. No more handicapped parking close to the doors at the Exchange. Good people, taking care of each other.
The hate Al Quaeda has for us doesn't bother me - but the hate some Americans have for their own countrymen, neighbors & way of life (a man from Syracuse at an AA meeting insisted we deserved what we got and more) just disgusts me.
You know, it was certainly a shock that morning, but for me the worst thing was what has come after in the 7 years since, seeing how the western world has not united to fight the threat. Because one of the emotions I experienced while watching the terrible events was, bear with me, a kind of relief, as in 'At least now they will all get it, now they will drop their petty bickering and get on board for the defense of Western values against the barbarians'.
But they mostly didn't get it. Except for a handful like here.

I can't believe that more people haven't woken up.
And I agree with kc, and others, who don't understand how so many don't defend what we have.
Similarly I hoped some time ago that people would realise that AGW is a hoax and would speak up and fight for the truth. I don't think it's happening fast enough.
