BHP Modifies farmland mining plans

Regarding the protests about a proposed coal mine in the Upper Hunter mentioned here, I heard some more information on the reason for the protest. I would be very interested in knowing more facts on this so I can form an opinion.
A leaked report suggests mining giant BHP Billiton is modifying its plans to develop a coal mine in north western New South Wales.

The company has been locked in a battle with local property owners in the Caroona district, south-west of Tamworth.

Opponents say both the exploration process and mining will irreversibly damage rich farmlands and underground water reserves.

Some landholders have blockaded a local farm for a fortnight to prevent exploration.
The property is called Rossmar Park and the property owner is Tim Duddy.
