Prime Minister Helen Clark is now safe in the town of Tekapo after she and her fellow trampers fought to revive their mountain guide yesterday.
But their prolonged efforts failed to save 59-year-old Gottlieb Braun-Elwert who was believed to have suffered a heart attack.
The group were tramping in mountains near Lake Tekapo in Canterbury.
