Severe storm warning for Gold Coast

I hope you have battened down your hatches!

Passed thru here this morn already, 4am. My problem is a funny old flat roof, all the water moving horizontally to just 2 downpipes. Bad design. Backs up and floods easily. Took me years to get it just right, even then every storm I clench my teeth waiting for the back room to flood. Hey the house was a bargain (and I inherit stinginess from my Scot ancestors they say, here's one:

Hey, why not blow my own trumpet - I only just found out about this famous ancestor, a 19th century Member of Brit Parliament - my grandfather's mother was his granddaughter, and I see he has a page of 'brainy quotes' attributed here:

http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/j/joseph_hume.html

"Worse there cannot be; a better, I believe, there may be, by giving energy to the capital and skill of the country to produce exports, by increasing which, alone, can we flatter ourselves with the prospect of finding employment for that part of our population now unemployed."

"Destroy or take away the employment and wages of those artisans - which the corn laws in a great measure do - and you will, ere long, render the land in Great Britain of as little value as it is in other countries."

Go, great great grandpa Joe!

Exactly what I was thinking too.

See Kae, we lost track of our roots because my grandfather ran away from his rich family to central Qld, where he changed his name, joined the Army and remained in it rest of his life, and came back from France to marry my grandmother from Roma. For some reason ending up back in Sydney where he started out.

It's taken us 50 years to figure all this out. Here's grandfather's Anzac records:

You'll see he gives his next of kin as 'Friend, Emerald'.

Hi Bruce
1. Mum has a flat roof and boxed in eaves - many times in hailstorms there was a water feature across the front full length windows of the house, which looked out over Bankstown. Houseguests were sometimes quite awestruck at the relative calm of the family when the indoor waterfall started. It was a bit annoying when the water began to drip through the light fittings.
2. Name dropper.
3. He's lucky he came back, enlisted 1916 and returned 1919.
I recall a photo of a man in uniform on the wall at Nanna's probably from The Great War, but I don't know the story of the man. He looks like my uncle, but he'd be too old, so he must be a relative.

I have mice. Lots of mice. Little buggers are everywhere. I'll have to buy a lot of baits and do the ceiling. Yuck.
