P.J. O'Rourke is on Q&A Tonight

Tonight's panellists
Julie Bishop - deputy opposition leader
Craig Emerson - Minister for Small Business
P.J. O'Rourke - author and satirist
David Marr - journalist
Dr Cindy Pan - doctor and author

Marr is a prick. A useless, stupid one.

Attacking Julie Bishop's comments on Rudd "tossing money around like confetti". And agreeing with her?! I'll be into the transcript tomorrow.

Cindy Pan. You can be a doctor (GP) and dumb as a box of rocks, too. (Or have I misinterpreted her?)

"Minister for Small Business" this will be a big ministry as all businesses gets small.
Marr is a satirist too.

That should be worth watching just for PJ O'Rourke.
I watched him for an enjoyable hour on the National Press Club today. He even had the lefties laughing at themselves.

Cindy Tan is proving that if one has the intelligence to become a medico, it doesn't automatically follow that one has the intelligence to sound bright about anything else. Craig Emerson is proving that once a Labor dunderhead, always a Labor dunderhead. And everyone is trying to impress O'Rourke that they are worldly, intelligent and are worthy of being on the same panel as he is, in particular David Marr. O'Rourke is a champ and the audience is clapping at anything that equals popcorn in thought. Mehaul.

Orion, you may have missed this one highlight (paraphrased):
Marr to Julie Bishop after she had fed Marr a line for comedy, "You're not going to be my straight man are you, Julie?"
Bishop: "Straight woman, you mean, (thinks) but, then I would be suprised David, if you had any use for a straight man!"

WV: typoe
Try typing that without making a mistake.

The prissy twit deserved any rubbishing he got.

Seeing the faces he pulled when a view was expressed that did not align with his opinion, and when he did pull the eyeroll/bored faces the camera closed in on Julie Bishop, who was usually talking when Marr mugged.

I don't know why people think doctors are gods or super-intelligent beings of any kind. A good working mind, combined with unbelievable persistence is what it takes, NOT genius. I understand and discuss things with my docs & I'm about average intelligence. But I don't have the dedication to put one foot in front of the other like they do when they're in school, so I'd never make a doc...or a nurse, or even an educator for that matter! Not enough singlemindedness. I AM however, cut out perfectly for my chosen path - I'm a pretty decent homemaker, which involves a bit of skill in cooking, cleaning, laundry, mending, budgeting, and household management. But no school necessary, TYG.

GAH! Long-winded tonight, too, it seems. MY POINT was that being a doc does NOT mean being clever or witty about any damn thing other than what they studied in school. In fact, it seems to me the opposite may be true!

Popular courses use a system in Australia which excludes those with lower grades. Only the top 1% of the crop of graduates in any given year are eligible to apply to do medicine. Not because they need to be smart to be a doctor, but to exclude the masses. It's the same with many popular courses.

I've seen it demonstrated that someone can be smart as far as rattling off all the answers, but dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to people skills, common sense, etc.

Cyndi Pan is a dill.

kae, kc,
the most important requirement in being an MD is people skills and common sense.
in the "old" days of the medicine women and men, it took bservation, listening to your elders and common sense, and it is as true today as it ever was.
It is only the fact, that our chicken shit lives are so important to us, that we revere the professional doctors, and don't they know it?

These days anyone wanting to be an MD has to already have a degree and sit an aptitude test, I forget what it's called.... gamsat?

Anyway, there's plenty of useless doctors around. A local one here is responsible for quite a few fatal errors of judgement.

"Bowel problems? Naaaah. Nothing to worry about. Probably just haemhorroids!"

Advanced bowel cancer about 12 months later.

"Depo implant? Naaaah. Not due til January...." unwanted pregnancy.
