Sea Critters - Portuguese Man o' War - not in Aus!

Portuguese Man o' War?

In Australia these are called bluebottles and they wash up on the beach often. The idea is to try not to get stung.

The really bad stingers are in the more northern waters. Irukandji and box jellyfish are two of them. Irukandji are found farther south than the box jellyfish.

Here is a comprehensive list, including pictures and descriptions.

Hi, Kae! Just before his last deployment (we were stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawai'i), My Chief decided to go snorkeling. Where he went in the water out of the kayak, there were no jellyfish, but where he came up (his idea of snorkeling is more like skindiving) was infested. I have a picture of the left side of his face, neck and shoulder almost glowing red. Yes, we treated it at home, yes, he deployed with the squadron the next day.

Pretty clueless for such a smart guy sometimes.
