UPDATE: Human remains found at Pheasants Nest, 70km south-west of Sydney

11/8/09
Something about this place.

Remains found on a property at Pheasants Nest. Remains were also found under a highway bridge, this article confirms the bridge as Pheasants Nest Bridge.

I wonder if the bridge is the Pheasants Nest Bridge on the highway in which the remains of two young boys were found at the bottom of a pylon. The remains were found during a check of the bridge after an earthquake. Somehow the boys got into the bridge and fell into the pylon. I just googled to find out more but can't find anything about them, I don't remember their names. Whenever I drove over that bridge I used to think of those boys and wonder if they were alive for a while in that pylon hoping they'd be found. How awful.

Strewn remains may be from one body.

Man charged with murder over human remains 12/8/09.

Police have charged a 33-year-old man over the murder of woman whose dismembered body was found at Pheasants Nest, south-west of Sydney.

The remains were found at three separate locations between Sunday and yesterday.

The 33-year-old was spoken to by police at his Epping home and arrested at 1.15am, police said.

Detective Superintendent Geoff Beresford said the body parts of a 33-year-old Sydney woman who had been missing since July 31 had been found.

She had been reported missing by a relative at Eastwood Police Station on August 3.
Man accused of dismembering wife.
MAN accused of murdering his missing wife, whose dismembered body parts were found in bushland in Sydney's south, has been refused bail.

Huan Sun, 34, of Epping, appeared briefly at Ryde local court today charged with murdering his wife Ling Mao.

The Daily Telegraph reports he did not apply for bail before magistrate Jennifer Betts, which was formally refused.

Yeah, I remember about the boys too but can't find anything else except the date. I got this from a website that was about police who were traumatised, it said that the date they were found was three days after the Newcaslte earthquake which would make it around the 31st of December 1989.

I'm sure that I recall that the boys were found quite by accident in the bridge pylon while it was being inspected after the Newcastle earthquake, it's also been talked about in a book by a police forensic investigator Esther McKay in her book Crime Scene. (Which I haven't read.)
I'm not sure how long the boys were missing, and if it wasn't for the earth quake they may never have been found.
That website about police being traumatised may have something to do with Esther McKay's new book.

Lyn said...

Yes, the website had an article featuring Esther McKay and it's called "The Scene of the Crime: One Too Many?".

kae said...

I saw Esther McKay on television promoting her latest book yesterday. It's about another police officer.
I'd be interested in reading both her books.

They look good, I love true crime.

I like reading true crime, too. I have always been interested in forensics (wanted to join the police and do forensics, but when I was 19 women weren't allowed to fire weapons in the police!! so it may have been a problem). I love following an investigation and finding out how they find the evidence and come to the conclusion and solution.
Mind you, I hate those CSI programs on tv. They're
mostly rubbish.
Did you see the recent tv program on the Bogle-Chandler murders? It's believed that they may have been killed by swamp gases!

Lyn said...

Very mysterious, swamp gasses? I didn't watch that but I did see the CIA -- The Night Caller: Eric Edgar Cooke. Makes you check the locks. It's strange that there have been more deaths near that bridge. I get chills every time I pass over it.

Lyn said...

Have you read anything by Dr Bill Blass? He is the man who founded the body farm. Brilliant.

kae said...

Go to the catalyst site and enter the name bogle into the search window for that site.
http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1795448.htm
Did you see the movie "Shark Net"? William McInnes was in it.

I haven't read The Night Caller, but I have read a book about Cook's murders, I think it was by Robyn Bowles. Her books are interesting, but she's a bit annoying with her flowery, overdescribed murder scenes(which include feelings of the victim). I was very interested when John Button who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend by running her down was released from prison. Unfortunately, the girl's parents still believe he was the murderer.

I haven't read anything by Dr Bill Blass, but I know about the body farm in the US. When I watch the real US crime shows on tv ('The First 48' is one, 'Cops' another), I am constantly amazed at the number of people who poke and stomp around the murder scene, walking all over the place, looking here and looking there, moving stuff, touching stuff, and they're not forensic experts. Makes me wonder how they ever solve any cases which don't have someone holding the smoking gun!

hi kae
i think exactly the same thing every time i cross that bridge, about the dead boys ... and i cross that bridge reasonably often ... i thought the police or coroner made comments it may not have been accidental, i mean foul play ... stevo

Stevo and Lyn
It's reassuring to know that it's not only me who wonders about those boys when on that bridge or when reminded of that bridge. I've tried to find an image of the bridge, but there isn't one on the web that I can find. It's a huge bridge.

Stevo
My brother told me that the space under the bridge is supposed to be kept locked up (there's a cage with a gate to prevent entry, only waterboard, roads or whatever have keys to carry out inspections as they were doing when they found the boys’ remains after the Newcastle earth) as there are no safety barriers around the hollow pylons. I wonder if the gate was locked when they went to inspect it. I wonder who was last there if it was locked. How did the kids get in? Was there other evidence with the boys of anyone else being with them? I think their bikes were found somewhere, but I’m not sure. I have so many questions about this and I want to know and understand how it happened and hope it was a terrible tragedy, not foul play.

It's so strange, I just feel sick every time we cross that bridge. I was unusual that neither Kae nor I (ilovewatchingdvds) could find anything on the deaths of the two boys.
I was reading another website about people that explore drains and it mentioned something about children dying there in the 70's (although maybe they are referring to the deaths of the boys and have the date wrong). http://www.cat.org.au/~predator/approach.htm
I don't know if it't true or not. Dr Blass is a great writer. When some experts write they don't speak in my language but he is entertaining, without being condescending.

Hi Lyn
Yes. I don't feel anything but sad and curious. I want to know what happened. I'm noone in the scheme of things, but I'd like to know the truth.
I have emailed a thin blue line friend who is in NSW and asked how I can find out info, or where I can. I have a couple of barrister friends, too, I might see if either of them can help with info or where I can find out about it. Coroner's findings are usually available to read. Do a search of the NSW Coroner, you'll see names of recent cases, or cases which impact us all (for example, the family killed when the highway outside Sydney collapsed during the storms last year? The year before?).

Lyn said...

It is really sad. Especially for the parents.

If I find out more I'll stick it up here. A link or something.

The boys names were Matthew Kelly and Jamie Egner (from Bargo and Pheasants Nest)I went to school with Matthew and Jamie and it was a very sad time for our community and their families. We believe it was more than an accident...

kae said...

Hi Anonymous
Thank you for your comment and your information.
Using that bridge would be worse for anyone who knew those boys.
I will see if I can find anything using their names later.
As I have said, I wondered about so many things.

Heading south on the bridge off to the left is a memorial for Matthew and Jamie. It was December 1989 and the end of the school year (year 9 age 14), we had returned from a school camp around 16th they went missing a short time later.

kae said...

Hi Anonymous
20 years this December.

Words can not lessen your loss, anonymous. I am sorry you lost your school mates. I think my curiosity, wanting to find out what happened in situations like this, is to reassure me that it won't happen again (if accidental) because all precautions will be taken in the future, or that whoever is responsible (if foul play) will be found and prevented from doing this again.

You know, crazy as it sounds, I wondered when I heard that human remains had been found at Pheasants Nest and near the bridge, my thoughts turned to whether the death of the boys and this recent finding were related. When they said they were recently dead human remains I thought it was a silly idea... you know I still wondered.

I don't know which thought is worse. That due to someone's negligence the boys got into the bridge and died horribly after falling into the pylon (at 1m diameter or so they would not have been able to climb out, too wide to "chimney" up, especially not with broken limbs). Or the thought that there was foul play and someone is responsible, and they are still living their lives free.

When you drive a little further south, you go past the turn off to the Belanglo State Forest ... another reminder of deaths (senseless and cruel). I was driving on Fullers Bridge across the Lane Cove River on Thursday with my father ... he said when we crossed, that Bogle and Chandler were found just down from there, on one of the banks ... and he said he always thinks about that when crossing that bridge ... I was too young to remember that ...

hi everyone. I work at Supreme Courts (custody officer) and cant get enough of true crime. I am currently reading Esther Mckays Crime Scene book at the moment. Its fantastic and would recommend it if you like true crime. I was looking for a picture of that bridge and came accross this blog. I have alot of Robin Bowles books but i find McKays raw. Karen

kae said...

Hi Karen
Thanks for dropping by - would have replied sooner, but had to take the pooch to school.
Thanks for the info on the McKay book. I doubt you'll find a pic of the bridge, I've searched! You can find another cantilever bridge it will be similar.
I see where you work and think WOW! that'd be interesting... but then I realise that like most jobs bits would be interesting, but other bits would be just mundane...

Ahhh well, life's like that!

The 2 boys who fell down the bridge in 1989 names were jamie egnar and mathew kelly. I knew them very well we used to hang out in the same group at picton high. It was shocking when we ( our group) got told they were missing. Phil was apperently supposed to go with em that day but didn't. It was weeks after we had a the newcastle earthquake an rta inspector went to inspect the bridge for damage and found em in the pylon on the south side left south bound lane. My nephew sash and i still talk about it and we both cross that bridge we always remember them. From the wilton boys rip guys

kae.to my knolage the case could be opend if further edivence comes to light. when the Belanglo State Forest killer was arristed and theedivance was collected they checked if there was any links between these killing and that of jaymie and matt. there was an atical in one of the sydney papers that high lighted the unanserd questions in both this case and glean and erins deathe on the hume highway (BETWEEN TAHMOOR AND BARGO) some two years earlier.as for the boys bikes . they never took them to the pot holes as they where droped there.

To the two anonymous commenters, if you read the coroner's report you would know the extent of the investigation into the boys' deaths.

A book written by the police officer who conducted the forensic investigation tells exactly what happend, you need to read that book.

I have read the book and there is no sinister alternative for the death of the boys.

They were playing, sitting on the top of the hollow pylon with their legs dangling down. One slipped and grabbed the other and they both fell to their deaths.

Children and teens had frequently entered the hollow under the bridge to play. The gate should have been locked for safety. I'd be interested in what happened after the coroner's investigation - what recommendations were made regarding the safety of the spaces under the bridges and the pylons. (There was a lid for the pylon, but it had been moved.)

The book is Crime Scene, by Esther McKay. I recommend anyone interested in this case read the book, particularly the chapter on the Pheasants Nest case. It will clarify a lot of things.

kae. im jaymies older sister i left the last to comments. i have read the books of esthers. i have spoken with her as well. there a lot of questions that dont have answers for and a lot of the time peaple hear or see thing that at the time did not seem importent or they didnt want to get involved in the case. i understand this im only trying to find more information that may help me and my brothers make sence of this sencless lose of two great lives.esther did a fantastic jod
b with the evedence she had and she dose say in her book that the sean was contaminated by the time she got there and even while she was trying to do her investagation.the was a lot of time that i would like to fill in between 12.12.89 the date thay went missing and the time they where found. plz any help would be great

Anonymous said...

sorry the 18.12.89 was the date the went swiming at the potholes and never came home.

kae said...

I'll get back to you on this, I can't do anything at the moment as I'm busy working.

They never intended to go to potholes they were meeting me & some mates at Maldon wier but they never got there. So many things just don't add up & don't make sence about the boys ending up at the bottom of that pylon. I've read the book by the forensic investigator & I was the first witness called to give evidence at the coroners inquest at the old campbelltown court house & I still can't believe it was miss adventure because although jamie & mat were young they weren't dumb. Someone out there knows what really happened to them that day but won't tell. It took a long time to convince myself that it wasn't my fault they died that day because if I hadn't seen jamie that morning & arranged to meet up it wouldn't have happened but we were just kids in school holidays looking for something to do to beat the heat & kill the boredom. I still visit their graves regularly & wonder what would've been. My eldest son is the same age as they were then & it's very saddening to think of what the boys never had the chance to do or become. I'll never forget Matty Kelly & Jamie Egner they were my friends

My brother recently passed away at that bridge. I just want to say that our family has had the worst experience with the police after witnessing their reckless and sloppy investigation. I only hope other police departments take pride in their jobs and that they believe in truth and compassion for victims family's.

Unknown said...

I dont believe that happened whilst matthew and jamie were missing i was shot at manny times in the area they went missing my mum called police when me and my mate got back from the river but they just brushed it off... something more sinister happened that week

Unknown said...

Hi you are on the same page as me i believe they were murdered as me and my mate were shot at the same time the boys were missing called police but they weren't interested it still haunts me to this day.
i still have nightmares

Unknown said...

Sorry to hear john but they love cover ups

Unknown said...

I have waited for years for police to speak to me.
sad yes i know

I was one of the anonymous writers a few years back i just read esthers book online there was nothing much in it apart from her swearing at the other cops whom wanted to have a stickey beak at the bodies and contaminating the crime scene.

Other than that nothing in there said anything egnar and kelly were dangling their feet .. so i dunno where you got that from. Anyway its been 30 years this year. Still remember them before this happened playing wall-ball at picton h/s with them.
