I'll bet she's a square-gaiter.

Julia Gillard is a square gaiter.

I'm sure.

I watched her awkwardly step off the back of the RAAF Herc (I think), onto the tarmac with her arms firm at her sides.

That explains why she walks so awkwardly, like a duck!

Update:
Here ya go, Pedro. Me in CCoy 4RNSWR - now defunct! (They combined 3 and 4RNSWR I think and I'm not even sure CCoy is still there!)

ARES2

This one's a bit unconventional, I had been out of the ARES for several years. For Anzac Day weekend I decided to go to the Country Club in fancy dress.

10 years later - forgive me?

"Jesus Christ! What idiot let you onto my parade ground! Your other left, you little grub!"

When more than half your weight is half way between your head and your feet, physics prohibits any other locomotion but a waddle from a bi-ped. Equations and mathematical proofs available on request. It is not the waddle that bothers me, it is the voice that precludes the need of a chain saw or angle grinder to demolish wood or steel.

Usually they coordinate the le-ri-le ok, but the arms are swinging le-fi-le at the same time...

Arrgh.

It's almost murder to march behind one!

Wayne, it's a source of hilarity for me to watch her walking anywhere 'cos she is so like a duck.

If she quacked it'd be a more tolerable noise!

Kae, most civvies wouldn't know what a square gaiter is.
Did you spend some time in uniform?

BTW, totally agree with your (and BOAB's) assessment of her gait.
Guaranteed to send the average Drill Instructor into meltdown on a parade ground.

"Bear walk
Also known as tick-tock, the bear walk is the only non-practical walk. It is essentially a walk or a march (bear march), where each arm is brought up with the leg on the same side rather than the opposite side. This twists the body, and is inefficient and less comfortable; however it has some rhythm and so does not automatically switch to phase with the opposite leg. If it is done on purpose it is done solely because it looks awkward and unintuitive. This can also happen early in footdrill training, where the recruit may suddenly find himself/herself in an awkward gait."

Checked your link Kae, Ta.

My old RSM would have had apoplexy and dropped dead on the spot had he seen your uniform in photo 2.:-)

I have always been intrigued to note that there seems to be a large number of the "old" Tim Blair site commenters who still lurk about that are former (or serving) military.

I know that your links and connection to "Ocean Sky and Khaki" have given much comfort to our diggers in the Ghan.
For those that have never endured the hardships of military life, even in training, they have no idea how much a simple little gift of a chocolate bar, a packet of gourmet coffee, a pocket knife, or even a pair of bootlaces can mean to a soldier in the field. Above all, knowing that someone at home cares enough to think about them is outstanding.

Thank you for your service, Kae, and thank you for continuing to care for our Diggers.

Zunting: it's called "zunting".

Bear walking occurs when the 6'4" 250lbs Commandant steps off to reviewed the troops on parade, and the Band plays "Teddy Bear's Picnic".

Cheers

I must say, you do look really good in fatigues!
And I do like the Sort of Dress Khaki for the club.

Now you have done it! Retired soldier [husband] just cracked up, then proceeded to show me just how Julia walks. He is still chuckling.

Pedro, when the Blairites take over the world, it will be short and sharp as we know how to shoot straight (and we know which end the shooty bits come out of).

Now, if only Wronwright would give the blasted signal...

BOAB, it IS taking him a long time, isn't it...

Kae loses the keys to the mower - Wronwright loses the keys to the Tardis.

kae said...

Yes, BOAB, and I know who's in worse shit than the lawnmower key loser.

By the way, do you think I should try all the stray keys on my keyrack on the Tardis?

I mean, who knows what happened the last time everyone partied at Tim's.... I'm sure anyone could have dropped the key anywhere! It could be found... anywhere.

Hey, Kae talking of parties, looks like Tim is in Bathurst this weekend.......you know what that means, now where is wronwright and the mead!!!
