Volvo closes factory in Brisbane, 130 jobs gone; Century zinc mine job losses in CQ

Merry Christmas.

AMWU assistant state secretary Warren Butler said the company announced on Wednesday it would lay off 130 workers, comprising 40 contractors and 90 permanent staff, effective from December 16.
Perhaps they should have been concentrating on developing hybrid vehicles and they would have been in line for Kevvie's Taxpayer Funded Largesse.

Just announced job losses at Century zinc mine due to the global economic crisis.

Australia's largest zinc mine in Queensland's Gulf region has laid off 135 contract workers because of the global financial crisis.

The job losses at Oz Minerals Century mine near Lawn Hill, north of Mount Isa, and associated port facilities at Karumba, represent 14 per cent of the company's workforce in the region.

Mine general manager John Lamb says metal prices have plummeted and morale among workers has fallen.
