Volvo closes factory in Brisbane, 130 jobs gone; Century zinc mine job losses in CQ

Merry Christmas.

AMWU assistant state secretary Warren Butler said the company announced on Wednesday it would lay off 130 workers, comprising 40 contractors and 90 permanent staff, effective from December 16.
Perhaps they should have been concentrating on developing hybrid vehicles and they would have been in line for Kevvie's Taxpayer Funded Largesse.

Just announced job losses at Century zinc mine due to the global economic crisis.

Australia's largest zinc mine in Queensland's Gulf region has laid off 135 contract workers because of the global financial crisis.

The job losses at Oz Minerals Century mine near Lawn Hill, north of Mount Isa, and associated port facilities at Karumba, represent 14 per cent of the company's workforce in the region.

Mine general manager John Lamb says metal prices have plummeted and morale among workers has fallen.

BEDI indicates world dry bulk shipping collapse

The Baltic Exchange Dry Index is a measure of world shipping and it currently suggests that world shipping has collapsed. (according to this blogger)

Guess why*?

Read on. (I suspect the curve is an inverted hockey stick.)

Now, Wand has suggested that we get our spies living at the bulk port cities of Australia, and anyone involved in the industry, to keep an eye out for any carrier ships. Seeing as they've just about stopped we should notice it, right?

*It's OK. The blogger doesn't know either, and one of his commenters has questioned his interpretation of the BEDI information. It's interesting, but does anyone really know what/how the BEDI works? Simplify!

(Thanks Wand.)

Though a little bird told me about 12 months or so ago that the Chinese economy was going to crash big-time and our resources boom would end.

Perhaps it's not news if you can't tie it to something else like the global economic meltdown, or AGW/CC, or racism. I'm sure there are more.

It's not news if it's not able to be tied to:

  • greed-caused global economic meltdown
  • AGW/CC
  • racism

Bailout defeated

BRACE BRACE BRACE
I think that's what we should be doing.

Well, should have been doing since the proverbial hit the fan.
WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives delivered a stunning defeat to legislation designed to rescue the nation's troubled financial system, sweeping aside a call from President Bush to "send a strong signal" of confidence to markets at home and abroad.

The 228-205 vote Monday exposed deep unease among rank-and-file lawmakers in both parties with what would be an unprecedented intervention in the private sector. The vote came as turmoil in financial markets widened, prompting the Federal Reserve to inject new capital into credit markets and forcing the government-arranged sale of Wachovia Corp. to Citigroup.

Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 777.68 points, its biggest one-day drop in history. It ended down 7% at 10365.45, down 9.3% since crisis erupted a few weeks ago on Wall Street following the meltdown of Lehman Brothers Holdings. All 30 of the blue-chip indicator's components fell Monday.
