The champion mare, who claimed two WS Cox Plates and Doncaster Handicaps during her stellar career on the race track, had been suffering from the disease for nine months.

She will live on through her progeny, four-year-old Rock of Gibraltar mare Sunstrike, who is a winner, three-year-old Zabeel colt Sun Ruler who only a week ago won his maiden in New Zealand, an unraced Rock of Gibraltar two-year-old filly and a Hussonet yearling filly.

I'm amazed how famous horses capture the imagination of a greater public. There have been several over my years. Gunsynd was my favourite. He was purchased for $1300, came from Queensland, was successful away from home, was ridden by great jockeys, was a grey, changed trainers in sensational circumstances and won over a range of distances. Yet when ever I backed him to win I always seemed to get good odds. I was working overseas in the early 80s and used to visit the local newsagency because they sold the Australian Post Magazine. One day I picked it up to see that Gunsynd had died and I can still remember the hollow feeling that it created. Silly isn't it?
