I heard about the gifts and....

Well, I've been in a similar situation.

It really is the thought that counts. When I buy gifts for people I try to think about what THEY like (if it's the same as what I like the choice is easy), but I do buy gifts for people who have different taste to mine. I would rather not receive a gift than receive something which has had no thought put into it at all.

I'm the same with cards, putting a lot of consideration into the message and design of the card. (I abhor rhyming sympathy cards!)

Anyway, this is Twisted Spinster's vent about the presidential, er Presidential gifts to the Prime Minister of the UK, Gordon Brown and his family.

YOU know that something is amiss with rational judgment when economics Nobel laureate Amartya Sen describes events surrounding Barack Obama’s arrival as US President as “turning an exceptional human being into almost the kind of godhead that he has become”.

Sober analysts must be standing aside, wondering about the role of emotion in politics and its implications for critical scrutiny of Obama’s presidency. But many other observers have metaphorically cast aside their crutches and accepted that Obama has made them whole again.

To be sure, none of this is new. During Obama’s campaign, Hollywood types swooned at the sight of a good-looking, left-wing, articulate man of colour. And the media was equally seduced.

I hadn't read Janet Albrechsen when I posted first black pres of the US - possibly the only reason he was elected.

Now, I’m sure there are many Americans who did not vote for Obama because he is
black. Some may well live in Wasilla. Hockey-mom Palin may well have encouraged
them to turn out to vote for McCain. But let me run this by you. If it’s racism
when an American refuses to vote for Obama because he is black, surely it is
also racism when an American votes for Obama because he is black. And can anyone
deny that plenty of Americans did just that when they voted for him?

I have a dream...

That Obama doesn’t get in. I’m sure he’s incapable. He’s got to where he is because of his racial mix, not because of his ability.

The fact that the choice of Obama is being lauded as a breakthrough for Black Americans, and all the hoo-haa about MLK’s ‘I have a dream’ speech shows that it’s a reflection of Obama’s racial mix.

I find it thoroughly annoying.
