A Japanese View of the Palestinians
by Yashiko SagamoriRead the rest here.
If you are so sure that "Palestine, the country, goes back through most of recorded history", I expect you to be able to answer a few basic questions about that country of Palestine:
When was it founded and by whom?
What were its borders?
What was its capital?
What were its major cities?
What constituted the basis of its economy?
What was its form of government?
Can you name at least one Palestinian leader before Arafat?
Was Palestine ever recognized by a country whose existence, at that time or now, leaves no room for interpretation?
What was the language of the country of Palestine?
What was the prevalent religion of the country of Palestine?
What was the name of its currency? Choose any date in history and tell what was the approximate exchange rate of the Palestinian monetary unit against the US dollar, German mark, GB pound, Japanese yen, or Chinese yuan on that date.
And, finally, since there is no such country today, what caused its demise and when did it occur?
You are lamenting the "low sinking" of a "once proud" nation. Please tell me, when exactly was that "nation" proud and what was it so proud of?

Gaza - Palestinian casualties shrinking...
January 25, 2009: Palestinians have found, in their decades of fighting Israel, that well crafted lies can be an effective weapon. The recent 22 day battle in Gaza, between Hamas and Israel, ended with the Palestinians claiming they had lost 1,300 dead, and the Israelis admitting to 13 (including four soldiers from friendly fire.) Now, as reporters get into Gaza, and start asking questions, the Palestinian death toll is starting to shrink. Medical personnel at the Palestinian hospitals say that there appeared to be no more than about 500 dead, and most of them were young males (guys of fighting age). Civilian dead appear to have been no more than a hundred or so.Read more.

ABC 7:30 report 29/12/08
Two interesting items on the programme last night.
The Nuclear Peace Ship which is visiting Australia to make sure that Hiroshima/Nagisaki never happens again. Video here (no transcript)
The other item of interest was
Israel pounds Gaza for third consecutive day.
That woman ain't gonna take no crap from anyone. I like her.
Honestly, with the Palestinians moaning about how hard done by they are it could be a lot worse. Not using civilians as shields is a start, but loving their children more than they hate Jews would make a big change.
But I don't think that's going to happen.

For more than 25 years a ship known as the peace boat has sailed around the world, promoting the cause of nuclear disarmament. Today it docked in Sydney, with some special passengers on board - survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the closing days of the Second World War.Mum's comment: "Australia doesn't have any nuclear weapons. Perhaps they should visit Iran, Pakistan, India and give the message to them."
The other item of interest was

The Middle East is at flashpoint, with Israeli jets pounding Gaza for the third consecutive day. World leaders and the United Nations Security Council have called for a halt to the violence after more than 300 people have reportedly been killed, including civilians and children.Tzipi Livni was interviewed and her interview is dispersed through the report.
