social networking and real friends

I found this piece by Skepticlawyer.

It linked to this:

I've wondered about my real-life friends, I have one who seems to think that they should all be buddies, but she doesn't understand the dynamic of friends. Different friends support me in different ways.

There are the ones who know what I do  at work and I can vent and unload and complain about things at work and also get advice and input about work issues.

There's the friends who can help me out if I need some kind of assistance (for example, pick up and delivery to hospital for procedures or appointments when I can't drive myself).

There are the ones who were my friends when I was a teenager, and they know me pretty well. They all have their different outlooks on life. They are all very different and have led different lives, and taken different paths, but their common link is me.

Even though I don't see them often (they are spread over Australia) or speak with them often, they offer me support in different ways when I need it.

I  really need to get my act together and send the gifts I found for my friends a while back. But some assembly is required and that's what's holding me up!

My life is richer for these friends.

love, loss, revelation

A long time ago, in a previous life, I was married. In mid July 1999 he packed his things and a month later he moved interstate to take a position after leaving the services, but that’s a whole other story! I hadn’t seen or heard from him since 1999 which was our last verbal communication. The property settlement was finalised in October 2000 and the decree nisi became absolute on August 31, 2001.

In about 2008 I bumped into his sister at work in Brisbane, her husband and I work for the same organisation. We chatted briefly (it was morning tea time), and she told me what she’d been doing, how their Mum was, about the death of her stepfather (must have been devastating for their mother), and that she’d suddenly found she was pregnant at 40, after years of infertility. I was delighted to hear of her miraculous conception. I also didn’t ask her any questions about the family or my ex as I didn’t want seem to be snooping/fishing and I didn’t want him to know I’d asked after him, and I didn’t offer any information about myself. She did ask if I was still living in the same place. I had some things which I had been keeping for all those years to eventually return to my ex, but I didn’t know where he was or what he was doing. I thought at some stage I’d send them to her husband to get them back to the ex.

Last year my friend was bored and did a bit of internet/facebook stalking. We were chatting over the phone and she asked me a few questions about the ex. She found him! She told me that it looked like he’d remarried. I was a bit surprised, but commented that they looked happy and that I hoped he was happy.

For many years I have told myself that I couldn’t have felt as strongly as I should have about him, perhaps I didn’t love him, and therefore I shouldn’t have married him. It seemed that it was too easy to put my feelings out of my heart and mind. At the end I wasn’t treated very well, we didn’t do anything together, we just stayed at home, me with the TV and him with his computer and computer games.

At 23 I met the love of my life (TLOML). Months after the separation I worked up the courage to call TLOML. We talked. One day he turned up out of the blue. Just drove in the driveway, on his way to Brisbane Airport to pick up his daughter, I hadn’t seen him since about 1988, when I met my husband. Even after twenty years when I saw him my heart was a-flutter, I was rendered speechless and kept catching sly glances sideways at him, not quite believing that he was with me! We travelled to Sydney a couple of times in 1999 and in 2000, but it was just to share the journey, we only spent the time in the car together. He was still very attractive to me ten years older than me and nearly twenty years on, and I suppose that’s because of the involvement of the heart in the whole thing.

About three years ago, after not seeing TLOML for quite a few years and always being the one to call him, I hung up on him on his birthday and haven’t been in communication since (the reasons are too much to go into here). There were a whole lot of things which just weren’t right. I suppose after all those years I realised that he would never change and I could never be a major part of his life, he just didn’t have time with his daughter, and his community work in his small town, he couldn’t fit me into his life. I couldn’t be part of his life as the mother of his child blamed me for their breakup.... Oh I could tell that story, it’s a doozie, I wasn’t even seeing him then! Even though my feelings for him are still strong, and I have no doubt that the heart would do flippity-flops if I was in his presence today, I’ve shut down the feelings and I’ve resisted any temptation to write to him or call him, and it’s been easy. I know what it feels like to love someone deeply, it’s a feeling you get when you see them, when you are with them.

My mother said I married on the rebound from TLOML. I began to think that this may be true a long time ago. After my husband left TLOML asked one day why I’d married, good question, should I have stayed single all my life in the hope that TLOML would suddenly come to the realisation that he couldn’t live without me? I don’t think so. I thought Mum was right, she quite often is, I had married on the rebound. After he left I was thinking what on earth I’d seen in my husband. It was also quite sudden, his leaving. (And that “why” is a whole ‘nother blog post.) Looking back after over ten years I know I coped. I had to. Though sometimes I wonder if I coped well. I had no permanent job and a mortgage, a small mortgage luckily.

In June I received an email from my ex. It took me by surprise and it seemed like a tiny door opening contact between us. I barged in, filling him in on the losses (family members and dogs), which he wouldn’t know about, to save him from the embarrassment of asking (which is another reason I didn’t ask his sister questions when I saw her). He was very low. His second marriage had broken down and he was having a hard time. He apologised for the way he treated me by leaving and for putting me through so much stress when he left.

We’ve been emailing ever since. He said he was happy to talk with someone who knows him and who will be straight. I’ve told him that there’s plenty of water under the bridge and we can be friends. I included a best friend in some of the emails, he’s really funny and needs people around him, and he asked after her. I said she was free, so now he’s taking her out. It’s good. People find it freaky, but I’m OK with it, so why wouldn’t anyone else be OK with it?

On Thursday I had to go into Bris to the cardiologist and on the way home was stuck in a traffic jam. I’d be passing a good Chinese restaurant turnoff at the time when the restaurant might be open so I thought I’d give it a go. I got a call from my best friend who lives nearby the restaurant and we talked, I thought about calling in, she said that someone was coming to look at her car. I said OK, then she told me that the someone was my ex. Dilemma! She said it should be OK, I didn’t want to make things awkward with them by being there, but she reassured me that, as long as we were grown up, and there was no fighting*, it should be fine. I asked “Can I just give him a Chinese burn?” She said “No. Not even a dead-leg.”

He’s just a little older than he was last time I saw him (he looks a bit like Neal McDonough, the actor in Band of Brothers). He’s still very funny with his one-liners. He approached me and we hugged. We three chatted over coffee and the engine of the car. You know, in that half hour I realised that there was something there, when I was married I had those feelings, I did get married for the right reasons. The “what did I ever see in him” thought is forever banished from my mind, and I don't feel guilty that I may have married him because he was there and it may have been  my last chance.

The Chinese food was $35 worth of garbage. Must have been the cook’s night off.

*she was, of course, joking!

Echoes from the past

I haven't been very posty lately as I received an email from an old... friend last Wednesday and, well, I think my old  friend needed my undivided attention in my spare time. I'll call this friend L.

The last five months for L have been hard. A broken relationship and a job out in the middle of nowhere.

Already it seems that the job side of things is picking up, it seems L is being headhunted for a good job in a field he is familiar and happy in.

As an aside, as  I'll be winning $30M on 16/7/11* I'll be telling my employer where to bash the job, too.

*I've had all the omens.... table 30 twice, and then seeing the 30 for the  lotto draw... but the chance is I have misread the portents and  I'll win $30.

*sigh*

Cyberstalking (to kill time)

Interesting.

A friend was home from work sick, and bored. They decided to have a bit of a look around Facebook. I was on the phone with the friend and while I was on the phone my friend asked me a few questions. Friend asked:

Where did the ex go to school?
Which year would he have left school?
How old is the ex?
Do you think he would have remarried?

The last question made me blurt out:

"Oh good Lord, I hope not!" Then I thought better of the retort, so I explained (although with my friend no explanation would be necessary).

"I didn't mean it that way, I just hoped he wouldn't be making someone else miserable... I hope he's changed."

Well, he has remarried. I hope he's happy and he has a changed attitude*. He works thirty minutes away, and I could have bumped into him on shopping trips if he lives near where he works.

Finding out that he has remarried has been a bit of a slap in the face. I joined a couple of net "meeting" sites - and that's a whole other blog post**! It's a slap because I'm still single. Maybe it's because I've become fussy. OK, too fussy. And besides, most of the time I feel very unattractive*** and not too bright**** - and there's no opportunities here "in the sticks" to meet anyone, either.

*I have a hard copy of an email he sent me after he'd left. I'd asked him a question and he replied with the information I needed. I'd also mentioned that I was going to the football in Brisbane (NRL match between Broncos and Bulldogs) with a friend. He said he hoped I'd have a good time and that he realised that football was one of the many things I'd given up when I took up with him.

Perhaps he's changed.

**Yeah, but not now. Maybe one day.

*** I think I just miss my youth... and

****especially in a new job I'm sort-of learning, and being hammered in!

(Oh gosh, I think I'm in lust! He's a bit young, but I can dream!)

That's enough blargle from me. Cooking roast pork, must put some vegies on. And find the apple sauce.

Plan D - updated II

Plan C

Straight to Plan D.
Okay, Plan D was the plan I didn't want to adopt. It's D for 'Do It Yourself'.

I put the sprinkler on the ground inside an upside-down large plant pot and ran it for 5 hours last night. This morning, I dug a little out of the hole, about 10 inches or so. Filled that up with water twice and let it sink in. The day was hot and humid, but overcast most of the day, so I could do some digging.

The top layer is dark garden soil, the earth under is sandstone and sandy soil fill from when the house was built, we had an extra large pad out the back because we knew we'd want to do things with it like build a shed and a pergola and it would be way too dear to do after the house was built. I could sit the crow bar on the bottom of the hole and just push it down with the palm of my hand, mind you, the undisturbed ground is like a rock, no matter how much you soak it, so I'm pretty lucky.

Bundy's right beside his sister, Katie (Katey I've been spellin erratically lately), and close by 48.

I asked my neighbour across the street to check out the grave and see if it was big enough. He was most impressed! He said to just straighten out the sides and make it a bit wider and that would be deep enough. (He couldn't help me, he's got back problems, and he's in his mid 70s.)

When I'd done that (mind you, it takes a while when you're melting and your shoulders are screaming!), I dragged the black bag into the two-wheel wheel barrow and trundled it around the back. By this stage it was twice as big as it was when I brought it home, and it was beginning to emit a rather strong pong. I wanted to let Bundy out of the black bag before I buried him, so I needed a knife to slash the black bag.

I scrounged around the Ladies' Tool Chest (bottom kitchen drawer), and found the stanley knife. I then pondered... I'd need help with this, I'd be hercing from the aroma. Who to get to help? The young fellow next door (about 30), had just got home with his boat, so I walked over there and asked for his help. He brought his two adorable little girls with him, they were all home alone, and he put Bundy in the hole for me. Then he helped me to fill it in. He was most impressed with the hole I'd dug, too. It only took ten minutes to finish up. I'll have to rake the dirt tomorrow because there's some we missed. That's if I can move tomorrow. The temperatures for all thie next week are supposed to be between 36C and 38C max and not under 20C min. Yuk.
I can feel a trip to the physio coming on. I hope I can get in tomorrow.
Update:
I forgot to mention these little bastards, which were in the hole and walking around where I was standing to dig. They got in my shoe and stung me, twice today. They have a nasty sting which can burn and sting for hours. An ice pack, or ice, will ease the pain.

Anyway, Floyd thought these visits from people were for him and was most put out when they left... he's a funny boy. So here's some pix of him for your enjoyment.

Still adorable.
Still way too smart!
Update II
Someone was a bit freaked out about the photos at the top of this post. I just wanted them there because I really didn't think I could do that, dig that deep. I had to and so I did. It has amazed me that I could dig that deep, though I did think that I was going to die somehow and just fall into the hole and that's where they'd find me after they noticed Bundy at the front door....

Flu shots, sleep and distressed friends

Friday morning I had my flu jab, and I've just finished a project which involved a deadline, a very important project to wrest money from the government. I am now having a week off. The combination of the project and the flu shot seems to have drained me of all energy!

I slept a lot of yesterday and last night went to bed quite early for me, before 10pm! I fell asleep almost immediately.

A ringing phone woke me from my slumber. Peering at the clock I could see that it was about 11pm.

It was a dear, longstanding friend from Perth. She needed to talk. Her ex, the father of her eldest child, had died. He had tried to contact his child, but the child (now in his 30s), refused to have anything to do with his father. The father had tried for a few years to contact the child, but the child had spoken with him and said "Stay away from me and my siblings." My friend had phoned him to let him know that his son had recently married. The ex had not changed, he used a nasty name he'd called her and started with the same old abuse, denigration and criticism of her which marked their relationship all those years ago. He couldn't help himself. She hung up on him.

Over the years there was a lot of hurt and pain, he had been vindictive and paranoid, and even doubted that the child was his (of all things!), and my friend and her new family had suffered; they'd been stalked and had all sorts of things happen to them. (The ex badmouthed my friend's husband to his boss - he was in the RAAF, fortunately the boss disregarded the lies told.)

The ex had died and his son had not had anything to do with him. My friend was sad that he was dead and died alone by the look of things. She had loved him all those years ago, and you can't just switch that off. She is sad that her son didn't really know his father and have a relationship with him. The father had accused her of poisoning his son. This is untrue, that boy knew that something was wrong, and although he's blocked out a lot of things which happened to him in the past, he did know that there was something not right with his father's relationship with his other family.

My words to my friend were "He made his bed, he had to lie in it. When you called to tell him his son had married he just went on with his same old rubbish and name calling, and I think that tells you that he would have been the same in a relationship with his son. His son would not have tolerated the put downs of his mother and the name calling."

I think I covered it.

Greetings from Miami

Mum's in Miami.

Or was a couple of days ago. A friend in Florida, on the other side of Florida, heard from her a couple of days ago.

She reckons Mum's crazy to cruise The Caribbean with the Great Barrier Reef on Australia's doorstep!

My friend worked for IBM for 25 years and was let go last year I think. Not a good time to be unemployed. She's got a big birthday coming up and hopes to visit Aus for her birthday - I think she liked the quality of the 21st party my family threw for her when she was visiting all those years ago.

I'm going to Billy Joel on Sat nite, FREE

Yahoo!

My friend from Mackay won two tickets to Billy Joel in Bris for Sat nite. Her hubby can't come to Brisbane for it, so she asked me.

Woohooo!

We've been mates since we were 14. Got up to all sorts of mischief in our teens. Lived nowhere near eachother since we were 15, and we're still best mates.

Now I just have to work out the logistics.

It'll be a late double 50th Celebration for us. (Oh, CRAP! That's 100 years!)

Now I have to figure out the logistics.
Car service Sat Morning.
Markets Sat Morning (at different ends of the Valley).
Take Floyd to see potters who have finished my order (at markets).
Might need to buy a new whipper snipper Sat morning.
Go to town about lunchtime and meet G/F.
Go to concert Sat nite.
Stay? Go home? We'll probably chat all night... arrgh! Haven't seen her since, um 1999!

I might have to rob a bank at some stage there, too.

MDFD Got the job!

MDFD applied for a job.

Friday she had an interview.

Today she got the job. She phoned me while I was driving home.

She's so happy! I'm so happy for her. It's a level higher than she is now and it's another step up into management. And it's with the same company so her super, etc, is fine. YAY!
