Helping Mum

One day late last week Mum phoned. She said "I wanted to ask you a favour."

How onerous could that be, I thought. "Yeah, what?" I replied.

"I've found a thing on the net to make guitar plectrums and I want to buy one but I can't find them to buy."

"Oh." I replied, while tapping at my keyboard. "Probably best place to look is.... Oh, here you go, Google these words... The first link, the e-bay one, click on it."

"Mmmmm, okay. Oh. There it is, oh, that's expensive. I'm sure I saw one for $30."

"Okay. Let me have a bit of a look..." As I tapped some more keys. "Here you are. There's one for $29.95, free postage."

"Oh," Mum exclaimed. "So what do I do now?"

"I have an account  on e-bay, do you want me to buy it for you?"

"Can you send it here for me?"

"Yes...." tapping keys again. "It should be delivered there between the 11th and the 18th."

"Okay."

It arrived this morning, before Mum was vertical. In time for Mum to take it to the school and present it to the music teacher. They are delighted! They won't have to charge $6 a plectrum to students when they lose them!

If only everyone I had to deal with was that easy to please*.

*Trust me, most are very easy to deal with, the difficult ones are just always difficult. Particularly when they don't get their way.

PS
I'm still not 100%. My neighbour made a lemon meringue pie last night, and made a mini one for me. Yum! I can make it last four nights.... I'll diet next week.

Sprung Mum today...

Arrived last night at about 8:30pm, stayed the night at Aunt and Uncle's near Parramatta....

I did NOT bring the rain. It was raining from the Kurri Kurri exit on the motorway (just spitting) when I got there, and as I travelled further south the weather just got worse. It was a thunderstorm, but the rain hasn't stopped - it rained all night! I slept like a log as I didn't sleep well on Saturday night.

AY 55 SK, white Holden Commodore wagon will one day plough up the arse of a truck doing 120-130 in the slow lane on the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway. (This is just a warning!) It will be that or he'll clean some poor bastard up in the centre lane when he has to dodge other vehicles travelling slower than he is in the SLOW lane and the lane next to it.

I saw plenty of great photo opportunities but didn't have time to stop and snap! Maybe on my way home?

Update:
Floyd and Meg are kennelled at a local place, where they went when after the night of the snakes a while back. I missed them on the last night I was home.
I just found out that I haven't been back down here to Sydney since 2008! That was ages ago!

Mum's surgery

Mum's fine. All successful no complications, except she's got very low bloodpressure - has always had it, but it seems to drop when she's had anaesthetic.

She's ordered me to break her out on Monday... or I think I will be out of the will (meh, she's spending the inheritance, it's not much of a threat!).

Going to Sydney

I'll be in Sydney from late Sunday 29 May to ?

Mum gets out of hospital on 30 May and she's asked me to come down for her.

If anyone wants to contact me and meet up give me a ring - mobile number is in the phone book.

Update:
It's currently 13C degrees outside, but inside it's 24C... I love my fire! It's supposed to get down to 6C tomorrow morning, probably before dawn. Today the temp got up to 22C outside. But it didn't seem that warm, and was only 19C when I popped out to the shops at about 3:30pm.

Floyd the Wonder Dog

They needed heartworm tablets, the furry kidz, so I bought some different ones - the produce store only had the enormous ones for dogs between 40 something and 68kg. The bloke said "Cut it in half, it means it will last two dogs six months, not like the ones for the dogs' size. It's a big saving!"

I agreed.

I gave Meggie her half tablet the other day. Just put it in with her normal dry dogfood, which she hoovers up, and it was gone!

Floyd was a different approach. I've never shoved a tablet down his throat, I've disguised it in a chunk of meat. But this was a bit big (about the size of half a man's thumbnail, and almost a quarter of an inch thick!).

How to give Floyd his tablet...?

Ahhh! I know. Blobbed it into the dripping pan. He had a bit of a sniff and a lick. Then he took it (he's very, very gentle), bit it - it must be bitter. He swallowed the tiny third he broke off, and kinda dropped the rest out of his mouth. I picked it up, and he tried to get it. I was encouraging him to take it with sweet words. He took it and crunched again. Another third swallowed.

Then it popped out of his mouth and fell on the ground, in some dust and fur. I picked it up and told him he really needed to swallow it. I had a bit of fat on my finger, just a tiny bit and thought I'd put that on it, but he took it and swallowed it.
He's an amazing fellow. I love him to bits!

He's learnt "Paw!" to present his paw, for shaking, and he gets a reward.

Problem is that when he sees you with the treats he will go through all the motions of the things he's done  before to get a treat. He'll start with sit and present "Paw!", when that doesn't work he will lay down, then sit up again. Always anticipating what he is required to do to get the treat.

He's so clever, he's got ME trained!

Oh, and Mum's having diverticulitis surgery this month and I'm going to Sydney to look after her when she gets out of hospital. That's something else I  have to sort out. Kennel for dogs and driving to Sydney. I think I'll only be there for a week, but see how Mum goes.

Mum's back!

She arrived home today. She forgot that when she left Alaska on July oops, that should be June 9 it would take three days to travel back to Sydney! (Including the day lost crossing the IDL.)

In Juneau she saw the Sarah Palin shop - and she didn't buy anything! Arrgh! The media has managed to convince her that Palin is stupid. I might have to send her a few links... and encourage her not to believe what the most of the MSM says as they are all tilted so far to the left that they're liable to fall over.

She said Alaska was amazing.

So, there you go!
